THE BASICS OF LOTION MAKING:
Here I will give you some starting tips on making LOTIONS, BODY MILKS AND CREAMS.
BASIC LOTION RECIPE:
WATER PHASE:
70% Water
OIL PHASE:
15% Oil
5% Butter (Shea Butter or Cocoa Butter)
3% Cetyl Alcohol
5% Emulsifier (Polawax)
COOL DOWN PHASE:
1% Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil
1% Preservative
Heat the water phase by using a double broiler and heat the oil phase into a different double broiler holding the temperature for 20 minutes at 70C. If you do not have a double broiler then you can use two Pyrex measuring cups and place them each in a different pot with a little amount of water inside the pot turn on the stove on min. and place each Pyrex measuring cup in both the pots. Keep checking the temperature being carefully not to burn yourself because sometimes when you put to much water in the pots it will over boil and bubble and that you don't want, so try to make sure that the water is only half way up the pot when the measuring cups are in. When the water phase and the oil phase reach 70C try to keep the heat stable and hold it there for 20 minutes. If you go to high you will burn all the good stuff like antioxidants and vitamins, but if the heat is to low it may not kill off all the bacteria and you could have things growing, and you don't want that especially if your going to sell your lotions. Then you add the water phase to the oil phase and blend it with a stick blender until its emulsified, and place the lotion into jars or containers of your choice. Do not cap until the lotion is room temperature. Date it and stick it in the fridge. It preserves better.
